• Advise organisations of your change of address.

Packing Up

• Packing can be done by Malone Moving. However, packing companies need to plan ahead. Get rid of as much junk as possible through charity bins or garage sales.
• Start to use all the food in your freezer to prevent wasting it when you move

2 weeks leading up to the move

Organise your utility accounts

• Arrange for disconnection and reconnection of electricity, gas, telephone and water -
• Don’t forget to cancel newspapers, cleaning, gardening, pet grooming and other local services
• Return things like library books and be sure you’ve picked up any dry-cleaning, shoe repairs etc

Cleaning Up

• Book professional cleaners if necessary
• If renting, arrange for carpet cleaners to come in after you have moved your furniture
• Defrost and clean your fridge and freezer the day before you move
• Safety – consider all safety implications when packing and moving

Last minute and moving day hints

• Make or confirm key collection arrangements
• Pack a small box of items you’ll need for immediate use in your new home, including some toiletries, a change of clothes, medicines, toilet paper, soap and towels
• Pack another box with kitchen essentials for the move day such as a kettle, cutlery, mugs, tea, coffee and snacks
• Do a final check of all storage areas
• On moving day, get an early start
• Turn off electricity at the meter
• Check that all doors and windows are securely locked as you leave your old house
• Be sure to keep your valuables, personal effects and important papers with you, so they don’t go astray
• Unpack bedding and make up beds as soon as possible – you’ll thank yourself at the end of a tiring day.

We, at Malone Moving & Storage from Lexington, Kentucky offer a comprehensive service of packing. If you are doing your own packing the following tips will help. However, you could contact Malone Moving & Storage to get a moving quote.  It is good to be packed-up ready and organized on the day of the removal whether it be from residential moving companies or office movers. The more organized the customer is on the day of the removal then the quicker and hence cheaper the move will be. Some of these tips may seem like common sense, but they are often forgotten in the midst of a move. If there is something that has not been covered in this list, please call us and we can help you with your questions.

• Have all your boxes packed-up and ready to go.
• If you are having a residential move, have beds, cots and any other household furniture dismantled and ready to go.
• If you do disassemble any furniture, remember to put the bolts and fittings in a plastic bag and attach it with tape so it will not be lost. Tape keys in a secure place.
• When packing, use the correct Removalist Boxes: these boxes are designed for moving.
• Begin by packing items you do not use every day.
• Label each box, indicating in which room it should go. Mark fragile boxes boldly so we will top load.
• Upholstered items should be covered with protective plastic to prevent stains or damage.
• Rugs and similar items should be cleaned before the move.
• Remove bulbs and shades from all lamps. Lamp shades should be packed separately in a sturdy box. To protect your lampshades wrap them in bubble wrap. Do not use newspaper as it may leave smudges.
• Glass table tops and glass doors on furniture should be wrapped with bubble wrap and heavy cardboard for safe shipping.
• Dry and canned foods may be moved as long as they are packed in a sturdy box. Liquids should be discarded or thrown away.
• No food stuffs are to be moved into storage.
• Chemical and hazardous materials, such as, but not limited to, propane tanks, pool chemicals, fertilizers, paint thinners, solvents, bleach, aerosol cans, and firearms cannot be moved or stored.
• Lawnmowers and other equipment with fuel tanks must be completely drained prior to a removal. We are not permitted to carry gas bottles.
• Drawers in furniture should be cleared of heavy items. Light clothing only may be left in sturdy furniture.
• Appliances should be disconnected prior to your moving team arriving. Also, take down shelves, light fixtures or chandeliers if applicable.
• Pack largest and heaviest items in bottom of box first. Books and other heavy items should be packed in small boxes.
• Large mirrors or pictures should be wrapped individually, covering both sides with bubble wrap and heavy cardboard, then binding with tape.
• Items should be packed in boxes that are the proper size. If there is empty space in the box use wadded up packing paper to fill up space.
• Small appliances and electronics should be packed in the boxes they came in whenever possible.
• For dishes and glassware you should use butchers paper. Pack dishes on their sides.
• Fridge drip trays should be emptied.
• Wrap sharp tools to prevent injury.
• Organise a decent parking place for the removal truck.
• We recommend that clothing be packed in wardrobe boxes. Depending on the size of the garment, these boxes can hold up to 20 hangers. Fill the bottom of the boxes with shoes or other lightweight items.
• We, at Malone Moving & Storage have experience in moving Items needing special handling, such as pool tables, pianos, Jacuzzi’s and ten seater marble tables.

FURTHER TIPS

BOOKS and records are deceptively heavy; we suggest you make use of the smaller boxes. As an alternative half fill the larger cartons and put light things on top. Pack books with the spine on top.

DRAWERS in chests can be left filled with linen and clothes but ensure that any heavy, fragile or valuable items are emptied. Drawers in divan beds should be emptied.

CLOTHES rails and wardrobe boxes can be provided by us on the day for the contents of wardrobes. Please make sure all hangars are same way round as this makes transferring them onto rails much easier. All other small effects in wardrobes should be packed into boxes.

LAMP shades should be removed and packed separately.

PLANTS pack 5 or 6 smaller plants in a box with some packing material between the pots so they won’t fall over, seal the box with the flaps up to give extra protection. Leave larger plants for us to deal with. Whilst we will take every care of your plants they are not covered by insurance.

FRIDGES AND FREEZERS from your home should be emptied and defrosted.

COOKERS should be cleaned thoroughly as grease can lead to a nasty accident. Pack the glass plate out of the microwave and any loose fittings off the cooker.

REMOVAL DAY

ACCESS TO THE PREMISES – Before your removal can commence, the van must be able to be placed as near as possible to the building. Think about the access at the other end.

THE REMOVAL CREW – Our crews are friendly and helpful and are trained house movers and office movers with considerable experience.

BEFORE LEAVING MAKE SURE EVERYTHING HAS BEEN LOADED – Check fitted wardrobes, lofts, airing cupboards, garages and sheds around your home. It is ultimately your responsibility to ensure that everything is taken.

DELIVERING YOUR GOODS – It is important that someone is on hand when the van arrives, particularly with long distance movers so that the crew can be told where to put each item as it is unloaded. Your furniture will be placed where you want it providing it is reasonably possible to do this. Labelling boxes saves time. It is a good idea to have a set room for boxes which will not be unpacked straight away to avoid clutter in the main rooms. Check with the moving team, that the van is clear of your goods and that any special items have been placed in a designated area.

It’s not often that you put your valuables in the hands of others. But, unlike any other movers, we were so fortunate to have the same people who packed our entire house follow us to our new home. We contacted John and Kelly to quote our long distance move from Dallas/Ft. Worth to Louisville, Kentucky on the recommendation of some friends who had used them for several house moves over the years. Everything was handled in a professional manner and John even stopped to see our house on a pass through the Dallas area. But I guess we should have expected that.
